I used to be able to tandem nurse the babies with my twin nursing pillow, but now they dislike it so much I have to breastfeed one at a time. It’s really fun when my twins wake up at the same time in the middle of the night. The last few nights, both babies decided to wake up at 3am. Yes, both of them, at the same. Damn.
Because we co-sleep, normally I’ll breastfeed whoever is awake, while lying down. Generally the twins and I fall back asleep pretty quickly while both of my babies nurse. When it’s the pair of them, I can’t use the nursing pillow like I used to, so I attempt a few different methods and opt for the one that makes them the least pissed off.
Stacking the twins, one on top of the other has worked in the past, but not anymore. They’re getting so heavy that they smoosh each other. My only other option (that I frantically attempt in the darkness) is to lie on one side and nurse one baby, then drape my other baby over the side of my body. Of course I focus on making sure their noses aren’t smooshed into my boobs. So they can at least breathe. Not the most comfortable but as they say, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”
Both babies fall asleep, and eventually, I can too! It’s midnight Boobie gymnastics!
