During pregnancy, cravings are completely normal but giving in to them isn’t always what’s best for you and your baby. Although you should not deny yourself those insatiable cravings, it is important listen to your body and honor it by giving what it needs rather than unhealthy snacks like that sticky bun that might be calling your name at the grocery store. Here are some simple tips to avoid negative during your pregnancy cravings.


Many believe that our pregnancy cravings and aversions help us eat foods that serve our bodies and avoid those that don’t, but let’s always remember our food basics; everything in moderation. Instead of going for a king sized candy bar, opt for a mini chocolate bar.

A change of location can always help stir us take our minds off our cravings. A nice dip in the pool is always an enticing option. You could even tackle the task of making sure you’re completely de-cluttered before you bundle of joy arrives, if you’re feeling adventurous.

We also cannot forget about hydration. So many times we think we are hungry when we are actually thirsty. Drinking a large glass of water before every meal can make us feel more full as well as more mindful of our food choices.

Being mindful of where we are can also help us with eating unhealthy foods. If you are invited to a party and don’t want to be tempted by the dessert table, call the hostess ahead of time and ask when they are serving dinner. This way you can avoid feeling pressured to indulge in an unhealthy choice. Also, planning ahead and bringing your own food can help you feel in controlled and empowered when your cravings seem to be controlling you.

It is also very important to remember that honoring your body also means honoring you as a pregnant woman. Cut yourself some slack when you give into a craving and don’t beat yourself up. One unhealthy meal is not going to make you gain excessive weight just like one healthy meal is not going to make you lose excessive weight. We must take care of our mind and body.

For some of us, cravings are unavoidable but we shouldn’t use our pregnancy to over indulge. Cravings are just cravings, they do not control us. Making better choices each day will go a long way for you and your little bundle of joy.
